Chapter2. Nurturing and Promoting Leading Industries
  1. The city of Nagoya has set up a variety of theme-oriented study groups to facilitate the development of environment-related industries. The themes includeresource-recyclingmonozukuri (makingthings), application of fuel cells, and recycling of low value added inorganic materials.

  2. The city runs business incubators to develop information-related industries linked to monozukuri (making things)industries.The city has also launched the N-cube Project, which is designed to organize IT-related venturecompanies and develop human networks between those working in industry, academia, and government. These efforts have brought about a variety of achievements.

  3. To promote the development of industries related to medical care, welfare and health, the city hosts “Welfare”, an annual international fair for the welfare and health industries to exhibit and present a wide range of products such aswelfare vehicles and wheelchairs.Thecity alsoruns a ”Human InterfaceForum” based on human networks across the boundaries of industry, academia, and government to develop industries related to welfare and health.

  4. The city setup study groups on educational robots and welfare robots to support innovative R&D and practical applications through cooperation among industry,academia and government. T hese study groups aim to develop the next-generation robot industry that has great potential in such fields as production,daily life,medical care,welfare,nursing care,education, disaster prevention and security.

  5. Since its ”Declaration for a Design City” in 1989,Nagoya has promoted community building focusing on design beyond the boundaries of the public and private sectors. The opening of the International Design Center NAGOYA and the hosting of three of the most important international design conferences are only a few examples of such efforts. The power of design is also being used to increase the industrial competitiveness of small and medium-sized companies.

  6. The city is promoting the development of the fashion industry based on four pillars: gathering and disseminating fashion information, developing human resources, extending support to fashion business entrepreneurs, and creating a fashion culture.

  7. To cope with the hollowing-out of the city is industry and to stimulate the local economy, the city offers subsidy plans for companie swhich will rent offices and set up business in the downtown area, companies which will newly establish or expand plants and research facilities, and foreign companies. The subsidy plans cover part of the tenant fees and costs for building plants.

  8. The city has established the Nagoya City Industrial Revitalization Plan which defines the basic policies and guidelines for measures that should be strongly promoted, while taking into account the ever-changing environment surrounding the city’s economy as well as the trends in the real economy.
