In Nagoya City. the agricultural zone in the
urbanization control area is designated as an agricultural development
area. Some parts of the urbanizationpromotion area are also designated
and preserved as productive green land areas considering the diverse
functions of farmland.
According to a survey for the basic farmland
register in FY 2005, therewere 4,250 farm households in the city.
each with a farm management area of 10 a or more.
In FY 2005, the estimated gross production of
agricultural and livestock products in the city was about 3.4
billion yen. down about 300 million yen from the previous fiscal
year.
The rice-planted area in the city was about
595ha according to a survey in FY 2005. with production of varieties
such as ”Aichi-no-kaori” and ”Koshihikari.”
As a low-cost and labor-saving production method.
the Aichi-style. no-tilling. dry paddy field. direct seeding method
was tried in the Nanyo District in Minato Ward in 1997. for the
first time in the Owari Region. The growing area was about 90
ha in 2005.
Recently.protected horticulture has been expanding
in the city. In particular. hydroponic honeywort is produced year-round
and its production volume ranked second in the prefecture in FY
2004.
The city has many community gardens where people
rent allotments for the joy of gardening and relaxation.There
are alsoopen farms where people can experience harvesting.
The city has also three distinctive farm parks
which people visit for joy and relaxation. as well as improving
their skills and knowledge of homegardening.
The
city promotes a variety of activities. including morningmarkets
and open-airmarkets.to develop a cycle of local production for
local consumption. which is designed to supply consumers with
fresh and safe agricultural products.
