Chapter1. Manufacturing Industry
  1. As of December 31, 2005, the manufacturing industry (business establishments with four or more persons engaged)of the city had 6,333 establishments (up2.4% from the previous year) and 120,262 persons engaged (down 1.0%)with a product shipment value of 3.6607 trillion yen (up 4.8%) and an added value of 1.323 trillion yen (up 3.7%). Among these four major indexes in manufacturing, three indexes showed an improvement over the previous year.

  2. The composition of the manufacturing industry in the city shows that the percentage of small and medium-sized establishments is extremely high,with small-sized establishments (with 4 to 29 persons engaged) accounting for 90.9% and medium-sized establishments( with 30 to 299 personsengaged)accounting for 8.6%.

  3. The classification by segment of the manufacturing industry in the city shows that general machinery ranks first for all of the three indexes (number of business establishments, number of persons engaged, and product shipment value). In product shipmentvalue, generalmachinery,transportation equipment, electric appliances, steel were, and food the five top segments, in that order. The top three segments have remained unchanged since 1982. In product shipment value by segment, general machinery and related products showed a significant increase of 16.2%,while IT related products and lumber/wood products decreased sharply by 28.6% and 27.1%, respectively.

  4. In the number of manufacturing business establishments by ward, they aremost concentrated in Nakagawa Ward with 895 establishments, followed by Minato Ward and Nishi Ward, in that order. In the concentration of the manufacturing industry by region in the city, different industries are concentrated in different areas:heavy industry in the coastalarea around the Port of Nagoya (including Minato Ward and Minami Ward), general machinery in the eastern partof the city (including Chikusa Ward and Meito Ward), and urban type industries around the downtown area (including Naka Ward).

  5. Recently in Japan, the share of the large cities in the national product shipment value has been falling. The product shipment valueof 14largecities accounts for about 12% of Japanユs total. Among these 14 large cities,Nagoya City has been ranked fifth for three consecutive years since 2002.

  6. The advancement of technologies that underpin monozukuri (making things)is considered promising particularly in enhancing the international competitiveness of the countryユs manufacturing industry or creating new businesses. For this reason, the city actively supports the advancement of technologies in the monozukuri (making things) industry and development of new technologies and products.

  7. The traditional industries in Nagoya include Arimatsu and Narumi Shibori (tie-dyed fabrics, one of the city’s six traditional arts and crafts specified by law), Nagoya folding fans, and wooden tubs. The city provides information and promotes activities to raise public awareness about these traditional industries and to preserve the skills of the craftspeople.
